FATAL PEDESTRIAN COLLISION (DELAYED) HIT-AND-RUN EAST ESCALANTE ROAD & SOUTH WINTER PALM DRIVE |
On the night of December 30, 2023, patrol officers from Operations Division East were dispatched to the area of E. Escalante Rd. and S. Winter Palm Dr. for a vehicle collision involving a pedestrian. The involved vehicle fled the scene prior to police arrival. Officers and Medics from the Tucson Fire Department arrived just after 10:30 p.m. and immediately rendered aid to the male pedestrian. The pedestrian was transported by TFD to St. Joseph’s Hospital with life-threatening injuries. Traffic Unit Detectives were contacted and responded to continue the investigation.
Roadway evidence indicated that the pedestrian was attempting to cross Escalante Rd. at Winter Palm Dr., in or near, a marked crosswalk when he was struck by an eastbound vehicle. Investigators noted that the streetlights in the area were on and operational. The pedestrian remained in the hospital receiving care until January 17, 2024 when he succumbed to his injuries and passed away. He has been identified as 56-year-old Miguel Martinez Mendoza. His family was aware of the collision and his death.
After examining evidence from the scene, detectives believe the suspect vehicle is a black 2013 or 2014 Nissan Altima. The vehicle most likely will have damage to the front passenger section and possibly the windshield. Anyone with information is asked to call 88-CRIME. You can remain anonymous. Updates will be provided as they become available.
