ODM in the Community
October was an extremely busy month in Operations Division Midtown. Numerous community events were held, particularly around Halloween, and ODM members attended and participated in several.
On October 21st, Lt. DeLaOssa and CSOs Alley and Mohammed attended the 13th Annual Community Cookout at Reid Park, a collaborative event presented by the Kings of Cooking, The Good Brothers Foundation, Dre’s Seafood BBQ & Catering, and Pacaw’s Wings & Things. This event was held in partnership with the Black Family Reunion, organized by Goodwill METRO® Youth Program and the Juneteenth Festival Committee.
On October 27th, 28th, and 29th, ODM personnel participated in the 29th Street Trunk or Treat festivities, the Boys and Girls Club Grant Road Trunk or Treat event, the Miramonte Park ribbon cutting festivities, the Annual Porchfest event in the Garden District, and the Tucson Baptist Church Law Enforcement Appreciation Day event.
You never know who'll show up at Trunk or Treat.
Ward 6 Council Member Steve Kozachik and community members at Miramonte Park.
Member Highlight
Operations Division Midtown would like to acknowledge the work of Police Officer Ron Engelkes, our Officer of the Month.
Officer Engelkes is a 12-year veteran of the Tucson Police Department who transferred in from Operations Division South in August of this year. He has taken on the responsibility of becoming the ODM School Liaison for all schools in Midtown. He typically receives dozens of phone calls each week from school officials requesting assistance with mandatory reporting. This alone has cut down on calls for service for patrol and ODM administrative staff.
Officer Engelkes also assists/coordinates with schools on community events. He recently participated in Halloween Trunk or Treat events and a walk to honor civil rights activist Ruby Bridges at Lineweaver Elementary. He also spends time at the Midtown Boys and Girls Club, involved in their afterschool programs.
Although he is not in the vicinity of many high priority calls while he is in the schools, he often contacts 911 callers on those calls to help relay real-time information to the officers responding. Midtown sergeants have commented that when Officer Engelkes is not working at the schools, he is helping patrol in the field.
On multiple occasions, Officer Engelkes can be heard on the police radio advising dispatch to either hold a call for him or to have the officer responding to a school call him to see if he can help or so that he can follow up with school administrators.
Officer Engelkes is very active and engaged at the schools and recently was the case officer interviewing multiple victims/staff regarding a substitute teacher being accused of inappropriate behavior. He also assisted Domestic Violence detectives with the arrest of a juvenile for strangling his girlfriend and leaving multiple bruises on the victim.
Congratulations, Officer Engelkes and thank you for your service!

Crime Prevention Tip
Sadly, the Grinch isn't the only one whose heart is two sizes too small.
Property theft spikes around the holidays. Houses are full of brand-new merchandise, gift wrapped or not, just waiting to be enjoyed - but not always by the intended recipients!
