Check Welfare Call Yields Armed Man in Stolen Vehicle
On August 31st, Operations Division Midtown officers responded to the 4000 block of East 17th Street for a check welfare call on a male who was slumped over in a vehicle. When officers arrived, they located a Ford Expedition parked in a driveway with a male slumped over in the driver’s seat. Officers approached the vehicle on both sides. The officer on the passenger side observed live ammunition on the passenger floorboard and alerted the other officers on scene.
An officer went to the open driver’s side window and made contact with the male, asking him if there were any weapons in the vehicle. He told the officer that there might be a rifle in the back. Officers asked the male to exit the vehicle and attempted to assist him in doing so. The male disregarded officer commands and began claiming he was having a medical issue.
Officers were extracting him from the vehicle when one of them saw a handgun that the male had been sitting on and alerted the other officers. At that point, the male began to reach for the pistol on the seat. Officers were able to pull him away, but he then attempted to flee on foot and was taken to the ground, where he fought with officers briefly and attempted to grab the gun of one of the officers on scene. He was eventually detained in handcuffs without further incident.
The license plate on the vehicle did not belong to that vehicle and additional records checks indicated that the vehicle had been stolen outside city limits in Pima County. Two weapons were recovered from the vehicle: a .223 caliber Ruger Mini 14 rifle and the 9mm pistol from the front seat. Tucson Fire personnel responded to check on the male, who was medically cleared. He was then booked into the Pima County Jail for auto theft and prohibited possession.

ODM in the Community
In September, ODM members attended and participated in several events throughout Midtown and the City of Tucson.
On September 15th, Lt. DeLaOssa and his wife, Annette, attended a community event at the Linda Ronstadt Music Hall as guests of the Mexican Consulate to celebrate Mexican Heritage Month.
On September 23rd, Police Officers and Community Service Officers from ODM attended the annual Sugar Hill Shop With a Cop event, helping approximately 20 families buy back-to-school clothing and shoes.
And on September 29th and 30th, ODM members participated in and attended the Pride Festival and Parade.
Operations Division Midtown Officer of the Month
Operations Division Midtown would like to acknowledge the work of Lead Police Officer (LPO) Cody York.
LPO York is currently assigned to ODM Squad 5, working the 2pm to midnight shift, and has been serving the Tucson community as a certified police officer for the past 4.5 years. Cody is always active while on patrol and a leader among his peers.
Cody took it upon himself to set up Microsoft Teams channels for each of the seven sectors in Midtown. Recognizing that email and text messages are not always the best ways to relay information for officers, particularly between shifts, the channels provide a mechanism for officers to effectively communicate with one another, sharing photos and other information to address issues in their sectors.
Not every issue generates a 911 call and not every call can be handled the moment an officer arrives—for example, a series of burglaries where there is not yet probable cause for an arrest, but maybe a suspicious vehicle has been seen in the area. That information can be communicated via the channels, so the sector officer in each shift can be aware of and look for that vehicle. This is also especially helpful when looking for people who are missing or wanted.
LPO York is respected by his peers, takes pride in his work, and is always looking to lend a hand to a fellow officer or community member. Thank you, LPO York!

Crime Prevention Tip
Going somewhere?
If you're going away on a trip, have someone reliable pick up your mail every day - or ask the Post Office to hold your mail and cancel or pause any subscriptions or other regular deliveries.
Thieves notice mail piling up outside and take it as an open invitation to burglary.
