HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION WEST ELM STREET AND NORTH NINTH AVENUE |
On October 1, 2023, approximately 1:45 a.m., the Public Safety Communications Department received a 9-1-1 call reporting a shooting at a residence on W. Elm Street, east of 9th Avenue. Officers from Operations Division West arrived to the area and located a 19-year-old female who had called police. The female was detained and additional officers responded to the home in question where they located an unresponsive male with gunshot trauma. Officers immediately began rendering aid; however, the male was pronounced deceased at the scene. Police identified the male as 31-year-old Joshua Johnson. Next of kin has been notified. Detectives from the Homicide Unit were called to the scene and continued the investigation.
Detectives learned that the female and deceased male were in an intimate relationship and had a history of domestic violence. According to interviews and evidence at the scene, investigators believe a confrontation took place between Mr. Johnson and the female. During the confrontation, the woman pulled a firearm and shot Mr. Johnson. The female fled from the residence and called 9-1-1 to report the shooting. The female had injuries consistent with being assaulted and was transported by TPD to an area hospital for treatment.
After processing the scene and reviewing statements, no homicide charges were brought forth, but detectives did find probable cause to charge the woman, Wanda Ieisha Wallace, with Hindering Prosecution and Tampering with Evidence. The investigation is continuing and anyone with information is asked to call 88-CRIME. Once the investigation is complete, detectives will present their findings to the Pima County Attorney’s Office for review.
