Business Burglary Suspect Apprehended
Burglaries have a huge negative impact on businesses and residents alike. We are committed to making a difference, not just in violent crimes, but also in the quality of life cases that impact our community.
In July and the early part of August, 2023, Midtown officers were able to clear multiple business burglaries, identifying a suspect as the person responsible for those burglaries.
On July 21, 2023, at approximately 0705 hours, Midtown officers responded to an alarm at a business in the 5200 block of East Broadway Boulevard. Upon arrival, officers checked the property and found all the doors secured; however, an exterior lockbox had been forced open and its keys were missing. As officers were on scene, the suspect, a male, exited the building and was detained.
Officers learned that another business, a restaurant, had been burglarized across the street. A quick check found that the restaurant's power had been turned off and a rear door window had been broken, allowing access to the door's push bar. No suspects were located inside. Officers discovered that keycards were missing from this business – keycards that had been located on the suspect's person when he was detained. Unfortunately, the suspect was rejected at the jail due to his drug use (which had also been the case three months earlier), so he was transported for medical care.
On August 2, 2023, officers responded to a burglary in progress in the 1800 block of South Alvernon Way. The business owner had been notified by his video security company that someone was inside his business. Upon arrival, officers made contact with the business owner, who advised that he had seen someone inside. Officers found that the suspect had entered an adjacent business by breaking glass in the front and had then broken through an interior wall into the business next door. Officers cleared both businesses and did not find any suspects inside; however, they were provided with surveillance video of the suspect. They shared the video with other officers in the area and the suspect, who had since changed clothes, was contacted and detained nearby. In his backpack were clothing and other evidence linking him to the burglary.
After being interviewed by detectives, the suspect was transported to jail, where he was booked on charges stemming from these incidents.
