PRIMARY ELECTION RESULTS - Unofficial election results show all of the incumbent members of the Mayor and Tucson City Council who are up for reelection this year won their respective Democratic primaries in yesterday's, Aug. 1, primary election. Mayor Regina Romero and Council Members Lane Santa Cruz (Ward 1), Paul Cunningham (Ward 2), and Nikki Lee (Ward 4) will all advance to the Nov. 7 general election. CITY AND FEDERAL OFFICIALS CELEBRATE $50M HUD CHOICE NEIGHBORHOODS IMPLEMENTATION GRANT (VIDEO) - Arizona Congressman Raul Grijalva, members of Arizona's congressional delegation, Tucson Mayor Regina Romero, Ward 3 Council Member Kevin Dahl, and others gathered for a news conference this morning, Aug. 2, to celebrate the City of Tucson’s $50 million HUD Choice Neighborhoods Implementation Grant. The grant will accelerate the City’s efforts to create more than 550 new or rehabilitated housing units, establish an extensive support system for residents in the Tucson House, and strengthen ongoing public investments in the 2.3-square-mile Oracle Road and Miracle Mile area known as Thrive in the 05. PUBLIC INPUT REQUESTED FOR PROPOSED TRANSIT SERVICE IMPROVEMENTS - The City of Tucson, in partnership with the Pima Association of Governments and the Regional Transportation Authority, is proposing transit service changes throughout the greater Tucson region. Public input is requested to help drive the change. Provide your thoughts on the proposed improvements, which include realigning and extending routes, investing in high-frequency service, improving access and quality of service, extending service hours, and adding weekend frequency. You can provide your comments through Friday, Sept. 8, by taking an online survey, attending any of 17 virtual and in-person events, or visiting the project website (links below). CALL FOR VENDORS: HOLIDAY ARTS AND CRAFTS FAIR AT REID PARK - Tucson Parks and Recreation will begin accepting applications for the 2023 Holiday Arts and Crafts Fair at Reid Park. You can apply starting Friday, Aug. 4, at 5 p.m. This event has been held on Thanksgiving weekend for more than four decades, attracting more than 140 vendors from all over the Southwest. All items must be unique, handmade goods that provide shoppers with a high-quality and diverse selection of items. Interested vendors are advised to complete the online application early. Vendors who submit applications after the fair is full will be placed on a waitlist. The fee is $90 for a 10′ x 10′ space for the two-day event. For more information, follow the links below. REID PARK ZOO’S SUMMER SAFARI NIGHTS PROGRAM EXPAND TO INCLUDE FRIDAYS - Enjoy Reid Park Zoo and cooler evening temperatures as you watch the sunset at Summer Safari Nights 2023, a series of themed evenings, now on Fridays and Saturdays for the next two weeks, with keeper chats, animal encounters, artifact stations, giraffe feedings, crafts, games, and more. Face painting and glitter tattoos will be available for purchase. Refresh with dinner at the Flamingo Grill and listen to live music by some of Tucson’s best bands. Take a ride on the Cox Jungle Carousel, and play games with Tucson Parks and Recreation’s ‘Ready, Set, Rec!" program. There will be a different featured animal each week. Summer Safari Nights runs through Saturday, Aug. 12, from 6-8 p.m. This Friday, Aug. 4, the theme is the capybara. Entertainment will be provided by Jamie’s Gang, playing classic rock 'n' roll. Saturday, Aug. 5, the theme is ring-tailed and black and white ruffed lemurs. Entertainment will be provided by Mr. Nature’s Music Garden, an award winning children’s performer.
