Tucson Police Homicide Detectives have made an arrest in a Northside fatal-shooting from earlier this year.
On the night of February 25, 2023, patrol officers from Operations Division West responded to the southwest corner of N. Stone Avenue and W. Fort Lowell Road for the report of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers located the victim, 61-year-old Warren Lee Lewis, with gunshot trauma. Mr. Lewis was transported to Banner University Medical Center by Tucson Fire. Soon after, the victim was pronounced deceased at the hospital. Responding officers had canvassed the area for possible witnesses and evidence. After processing the scene, no suspects were immediately identified.
According to interviews, Mr. Lewis was walking on N. Stone Avenue with another individual when a car drove by them and opened fire. A security guard who was working in the area heard the shooting and located Mr. Lewis near the roadway. Through an extensive review of forensic evidence, detectives identified the suspect as 25-year-old Carlos Gandara Jr. An arrest warrant was obtained for Gandara and officers from Operations Division West/Community Response Team (ODW/CRT) began searching for him.
On July 26, 2023, ODW/CRT located the suspect at a residence near N. Flowing Wells Road and W. Fort Lowell Road. Members from TPD SWAT responded to assist and safely took Gandara into custody. Detectives contacted Carlos Gandara and he was ultimately transported and booked into the Pima County Jail. He is currently being held on his arrest warrant for 1st Degree Murder, Drive-by Shooting, and Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon. The investigation remains ongoing and detectives are asking anyone with information to contact 88-CRIME.
