ODW NCS Detectives Witness Shooting
TPD Operations Division West Neighborhood Crimes Section (ODW NCS) has been working hard on apprehending those responsible for committing property crimes in our westside neighborhoods and businesses.
ODW NCS detectives frequently organize shoplifting and burglary deployments to address ongoing issues with theft. NCS conducted several such deployments in June, catching numerous shoplifters in the act. During one burglary deployment, detectives witnessed a shooting and were able to identify the shooter after he fled and crashed at Grant and Oracle. The suspect was booked into jail and charged with 7 felonies!
Those detectives deployed at 4:00 a.m. that day and were it not for their proactive efforts and presence, that suspect might still be at large. Kudos to ODW NCS!

ODW in the Community
Toys for Tots Event
On June 24, 2023, ODW Police Officers and Community Service Officers (CSOs) participated in an event at GAP Ministries (2025 W Highway Dr) where children living in foster and group homes received backpacks, school supplies, and toys. The kids played basketball with CSOs, made friends with K9 Bosco, and raced each other while motor officers clocked their speed. Chief Kasmar even joined in the festivities, racing with the children. A great time was had by all, and the Chik-fil-A cow put smiles on everyone’s faces.

Tucson Refugee Ministry Day Camp
Every Tuesday in June, Tucson Refugee Ministry held a children’s day camp at their facility near Prince and Stone. Our officers and CSOs attended every Tuesday to play with the children and get to know them. They enjoyed the opportunity to participate in games and activities with the kids.

Member Highlight
CSO Karla Rubio-Corral is one of the division’s Community Resource Officers. Before becoming a CSO, she was a volunteer with the Tucson Police Department. She attends many neighborhood meetings and community events on behalf of TPD ODW, building valuable relationships with community members. Her work with the community received accolades from TPD’s Community Engagement Coordinator Margo Susco, who wrote the following:
I want to sing the praises of CSO Karla Rubio-Corral. She has recently attended two of our major events, and she is not only a pleasure to work with, but she is incredible in representing Team 2. CSO Rubio-Corral came to the CSO program through our volunteer program, so she has years of community engagement experience behind her. She is highly professional, but has an authentic and robust way of connecting with our community, especially our youth. She was instrumental at World Refugee Day, coloring with kids, helping with food, recruiting and generally having fun connecting with our refugee families. She also attended our Kids Fun Fest at GAP ministries, jumping right in to hand out stickers, connect with our youth and handle anything I needed her to.
I am grateful to her for adding so much to both events.
Karla, we appreciate all you do to connect TPD with the westside community!
