On Sunday, July 2, 2023, shortly before 2:30 a.m., officers from Operations Division East and personnel from the Tucson Fire Department responded to the 1600 block of N. Harrison Rd. for reports of a collision involving a black 2008 Harley Davidson XL1200 motorcycle and a black and white 2017 Yamaha SCR950 motorcycle. Both riders were declared deceased at the scene. The operator of the Harley has been identified as 48-year-old Andrew Machalik. The operator of the Yamaha has been identified as 38-year-old Adam Robert Gregory. Next of kin have been notified of their passing.
Detectives from the Traffic Investigations Unit responded to the scene to continue the investigation. After conducting interviews and evaluating roadway evidence, detectives learned that both Mr. Gregory and Mr. Machalik were traveling eastbound on E. Wrightstown Rd. Mr. Gregory was ahead of Mr. Machalik and had negotiated the curve where E. Wrightstown Rd. turns into S. Harrison Rd., and was now traveling southbound. Mr. Machalik failed to negotiate the curve appropriately, drifted into the center lane, struck the concrete barrier island in the center of the roadway, and ultimately collided with the rear of Mr. Gregory's motorcycle.
Failure to reduce and control speed to avoid a collision by Mr. Machalik is the known contributing factor of the collision. Detectives are working on determining if excessive speed is also a factor. Both Mr. Gregory and Mr. Machalik were not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.
This remains an active investigation.
