Tucson, AZ, August 29, 2023 – Tucson Police Traffic Detectives are investigating a fatal-bicycle collision that happened last night just before 11:00 p.m. in Operations Division West.
Patrol officers responded to the 1200 block of N. Stone Avenue, near E. Helen Street, for the report of a collision involving a bicyclist. Medics from the Tucson Fire Department also responded to the crash and evaluated the involved parties. The bicyclist, identified as a 69-year-old male, was pronounced deceased at the scene. His identity is being withheld until his family is notified. Detectives from TPD’s Traffic Investigations Unit were notified of the collision and responded to continue the investigation.
Through interviews and roadway evidence, detectives learned that the bicyclist was riding his bicycle northbound, in the multi-use (center lane), on Stone Avenue. At some point, the bicyclist swerved into the southbound lane of Stone Avenue and was struck by a southbound Toyota Camry. The 25-year-old driver of the Camry immediately stopped after the collision and fully cooperated with the investigation. An officer from the DUI squad determined that the driver was not impaired. The investigation remains on-going and detectives have listed unsafe movement by the bicyclist as the major contributing factor.
