On June 24, 2023, just before 12:15 a.m., officers from Operations Division West and personnel from the Tucson Fire Department (TFD) were dispatched to the 3400 block of N. 1st Ave. for a report of a collision involving an adult male pedestrian and a white 2010 GMC Sierra pickup truck. TFD personnel evaluated all parties involved, ultimately declaring the pedestrian deceased at the scene. He has been identified as 65-year-old Curtis Anthony Wahl. Next of kin has been notified of his passing.
Detectives from the Traffic Investigations Unit were contacted and responded to continue the investigation. After conducting interviews and evaluating roadway evidence, detectives determined that Mr. Wahl was attempting to cross 1st Ave. from west to east when he was struck by the GMC, which was traveling northbound at the same time. Mr. Wahl was not in a marked crosswalk at the time of the collision.
The driver of the GMC, an adult male, immediately stopped after the collision and cooperated with the investigation. An officer from the Impaired Driving Enforcement Unit responded and determined that he was impaired at the time of the collision. The driver of the GMC, 26-year-old Josue Andre Larios, was charged and booked into Pima County Jail on the felony charge of Manslaughter.
Mr. Wahl's mid-blocking crossing, Mr. Larios speeding, and impaired driving are the major contributing factors in the collision.
