On May 23, 2023, shortly before 8:30 p.m., officers from Operations Division East responded to the intersection of E. Speedway Blvd. and N. Rook Ave. for reports of a collision involving an adult-male pedestrian and a silver 2005 Honda Accord. Personnel from the Tucson Fire Department responded and transported the pedestrian to St. Joseph’s Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Detectives from the Traffic Investigations Unit responded to the scene to continue the investigation. After conducting interviews and evaluating roadway evidence, detectives learned that the pedestrian was attempting to cross E. Speedway Blvd., from south to north, when he was struck by the Accord that was traveling westbound on Speedway Blvd. The Accord immediately stopped after the collision and cooperated with the investigation. At this time, it is believed that the pedestrian was crossing within a crosswalk but had not activated the HAWK (high-intensity activated crosswalk) signal when he was struck.
An officer from the Impaired Driver Enforcement Unit responded to evaluate the driver of the Accord. It was determined that the driver was not impaired at the time of the collision.
Failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk is the major contributing factor of the collision.
On June 3, 2023, the Tucson Police Department was notified that the pedestrian had passed away as a result of the injuries he sustained from the collision. He has been identified as 72-year-old Marion Maciejewski. Next of kin has been notified of his passing.
This remains an ongoing investigation. Any citations or charges are pending further investigation.
