Repeat ORT Offenders Arrested
Operations Division Midtown (ODM) personnel continue to have an impact on organized retail theft, working closely with retail partners at El Con Mall.
On March 20, 2023, a subject entered a large retail outlet, concealed over $220 worth of merchandise, and passed all points of sale without paying. She was detained by ODM Zebra officers outside the store. Loss Prevention advised of a previous case in which the same person stole over $240 worth of merchandise. After being read her Miranda rights, the subject admitted that she came to steal merchandise, which she planned to sell in order to purchase fentanyl. A records check revealed several organized retail theft arrests and convictions in the last seven years. The subject also had a full extradition felony warrant for fraud, plus eight misdemeanor warrants. She was arrested for organized retail theft, aggravated shoplifting, felony paraphernalia, and her nine warrants.
Then, on March 27, 2023, ODM personnel were notified of a repeat offender at the same retail outlet. Loss Prevention alerted officers as the subject was exiting without paying. After a brief foot pursuit, he was detained. A records check revealed a full extradition narcotics warrant. The subject was also identified as having stolen from the same location in August 2022, and from other store locations in recent months. He was trespassed from all the retailer's Tucson locations and booked on his felony warrant, while investigators seek additional charges.

Doolen Middle School Event
On March 14, 2023, ODM Officers Pina and Enriquez and CSOs Avalos and Alley spent the lunch hour at Doolen Middle School hanging out and playing basketball with the kids.
We were joined by community partner Eegee’s, which donated ... Eegee’s! We were excited to return and do the same for second period lunch, as the Eegee's disappeared VERY quickly in the first hour. A big shout out to all the kids, Ms. Nathaly Santin, Principal at Doolen, and Ms. Gracie Contreras from Eeegee's, for making this day possible. We can’t wait to see you all again soon!
Thank you to everyone who came out and watched the Tucson Police vs Tucson Fire hockey game on March 18, 2023, and helped raise money for charity. TFD came out on top in a close game, winning 4-3.
TPD's Traffic Section has created a new program called Traffic Watch. Community members can use it to report reckless driving they observe. (Immediate hazards, such as an impaired driver or road rage, should still be reported using 911.)
A motor officer will review Traffic Watch reports and decide the most appropriate action: a courtesy letter, a citation, or an arrest.
Remember that using your cellphone to record driving behavior while you yourself are driving is dangerous and illegal.
You can visit the Traffic Watch site here. And here's a short video introducing the program.
Member Highlight
ODM would like to acknowledge the work of Officer Jeffrey Wadleigh, April's ODM Officer of the Month.
Currently assigned to the ODM Neighborhood Crimes Section (NCS), Officer Wadleigh is proactively working neighborhood problems alongside NCS detectives.
In March, Officer Wadleigh received information on a person of interest in a burglary that had occurred several months prior. He conducted a criminal records check on the subject and was able place him in the immediate area within hours of when the burglaries occurred. By wading through body-worn camera (BWC) video of those police contacts, Officer Wadleigh was able not only to show proof that the subject was in the area, but also that the clothing he was wearing in the BWC video matched that of the burglar, who was captured in the act on surveillance video. The subject was located and he admitted to the crime in an interview with Officer Wadleigh and NCS detectives. Nice work, Jeff!

Crime Prevention Tip
The number one favorite way for burglars to break in is through an unlocked door or window.
So while you're remembering to lock your doors and windows, don't forget the garage - thieves often gain access to the main house through an attached garage.
