ODS Street Takeover Deployments
On March 3, 2023, officers in Operations Division South (ODS) found street takeover groups forming at Mission Manor Park. They closed the east and west parking lots and, with the meeting point disrupted, participants dispersed before any criminal activity could take place.
Later in the evening, participants regrouped at a business in the 5600 block of South Nogales Highway. Officers responded at 9:00 p.m. and arrested five adults for trespassing. All were participants in street takeover groups.
Following this contact, the group made its way to a business in the 1800 block of West Valencia Road. There, officers arrested three juveniles and seven adults for spectating. One vehicle was subject to mandatory tow.
Later, the group took over the intersection at 22nd and Kino. Officers responded from the west in a skirmish line to disperse them. Most vehicles fled into the industrial area north of 22nd Street and west of Kino Boulevard. One vehicle slammed into a locked fence at a business in the 900 block of South Highland Avenue and fled.
Vehicle at a "street takeover" event
On March 5, 2023, information was obtained that there would be another street takeover that day (Sunday). Officers responded to the intersection at Drexel and Midvale Park and dispersed the crowd. Motor officers conducted traffic stops as vehicles left the area. As the day progressed, other locations were identified; however, officers responded quickly, and no large crowds were able to gather.
At approximately 6:00 p.m., a call for service was generated for a group of approximately 20 vehicles gathered near an abandoned cement factory in the 11000 block of East Valencia Road. Several vehicles were doing burnouts (a drag racing maneuver) and driving recklessly. Officers and the TPD Air Unit responded to the area. Traffic stops were conducted near the intersection of Valencia and Kolb, including stops of two vehicles identified from live video of the event. During these stops, another group responded to the area, got out of their vehicles, and started recording the officers, berating them for towing vehicles and seizing cell phones.
Throughout the deployment, 28 traffic stops resulted in 26 citations/warnings, six arrests, and seven vehicle impounds.
