Seriously Injured Officer
At the beginning of February, while responding to a hit and run involving a pedestrian, one of Operations Division West's police officers, Kyle Lorenz, was struck by a suspected impaired driver and suffered life-threatening injuries.
Other officers were on the scene and rendered first aid. Tucson Fire transported the officer to Banner University Medical Center. Unfortunately, he suffered the loss of his lower right leg.
Officer Lorenz is very grateful, as we all are, for everyone who took care of him - his fellow officers, Tucson Fire personnel, and the medical team at Banner - and for the support of the Tucson community. He is on the road to recovery and determined to return to patrol.
Many have asked how they can help. The Erik Hite Foundation has kindly offered to collect donations for the officer's recovery and care. That link is here.

Gem Show
ODW members were happy to be part of another safe and successful Gem Show. The Tucson Gem, Mineral & Fossil Showcase largely takes part within the boundaries of Operations Division West.
Tucson steps onto the world stage when it hosts this event, welcoming visitors from around the world - many of whom come back year after year. It is our pleasure to help ensure that their experience is a safe one.

Apprehension of Violent Sexual Assault Suspect
In November 2021, two females were violently assaulted near Saint Mary’s Hospital. Tucson Police Department's Adult Sexual Assault Unit worked tirelessly to identify the suspect. Once identified, TPD looked for the suspect for over a year. On February 26th, ODW Officer Ryan Alexander located the suspect at the Ronstadt Transit Center, where he was taken into custody.
ODW CRT Moonlights as Grubhub
Operations Division West (ODW) Community Response Team (CRT) officers were working the area of Fort Lowell and Stone when they identified a vehicle acting suspiciously and committing multiple traffic violations. Upon making contact with the driver, they were able to seize a firearm from a prohibited possessor. During the investigation, it was discovered that the occupant was en route to deliver Chinese food for Grubhub. CRT officers not only completed the investigation, potentially preventing a violent crime, but went above and beyond, taking the undelivered food safely to a hungry customer.

Crime Prevention Tip

Ouch! Nobody wants to mess with a cholla.
Planting cactus under a window can be an effective deterrent against burglars.
Consider cholla or other spiky plants, especially for windows that are less visible to neighbors or people passing by on the street (and therefore more attractive to burglars).
