On March 3, 2023, just before 6:45 p.m., officers from Operations Division West and personnel from the Tucson Fire Department (TFD) were dispatched to the intersection of N. Grande Ave. and W. St. Marys Rd. for reports of a two-vehicle collision involving a blue 2007 Chevrolet Silverado and a black 2013 Hyundai Sonata. TFD transported the adult male Sonata driver and the adult female passenger to Banner University Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. Officers remained at the scene of the collision while the roadway was cleared. Officers then conducted follow-up at the hospital, where they were advised that the injuries to the passenger were now life-threatening. Detectives were not contacted at the scene as the injuries were initially believed to be non-life-threatening.
Officers investigated the collision by conducting interviews and evaluating roadway evidence. Officers learned that the Silverado was traveling eastbound on St. Marys Rd. attempting to make a left-hand turn to go northbound Grande Ave. when it collided with the Sonata that was traveling westbound on St. Marys Rd.
On Sunday, March 5, 2023, the Office of the Medical Examiner advised the Tucson Police Department that the adult female passenger in the Sonata had passed away. She has been identified as 94-year-old Mary Nunez Ramirez. Next of kin has been notified of her passing.
Detectives from the Traffic Investigation Unit will review the case with the evidence available and try to determine the cause of the collision.
This remains an ongoing investigation, and no charges and citations have been issued at this time.
