During Black History Month, and throughout the year, the Tucson Police Department celebrates and acknowledges the many contributions made by Tucson's African American community to our city.

Ghost Gun Seizure

The ODM Community Response Team (CRT) continues their hard work in and around the PNI (Place Network Investigations) area at Grant and Alvernon. PNI is a multi-disciplinary approach to reducing chronic gun-related violence by disrupting underlying criminal networks.

On January 7th, ODM CRT assisted TPD's Violent Crimes Section in surveilling a person of interest. During that surveillance, the subject, a 17-year-old male, was seen moving a handgun from his pocket to his waistband. Probable cause for arrest existed, as the subject was a prohibited possessor who had shot himself in the leg the month before.

CRT marked patrol units arrested the subject without incident and retrieved a 9mm ghost gun from his waistband, along with fentanyl paraphernalia. A search warrant was obtained, which yielded another 9mm handgun and additional drug paraphernalia.

ODM in the Community

On January 28th, officers from ODM attended and participated in a First Responder Appreciation Event hosted by Alto at the Walgreens at 22nd and Alvernon. Alto has partnered with Walgreens on innovative technology solutions to fight retail theft systematically, working closely with law enforcement, prosecutors, nonprofits and government to effect positive change in communities.

University of Arizona Police Chief Paula Balafas, Deputy Chief Mario Leon, and Assistant Chief Bob Summerfield were at the TPD Midtown substation the evening of January 11th to award TPD Officer Chase Bryan the lifesaving medal for administering naloxone, a drug used to reverse opioid overdose, while he was employed with the University of Arizona Police Department.

Congratulations, Chase! That will look good on your new uniform here at TPD. We are fortunate to have you and excited for your future here!

Crime Prevention Tip

In Churchill, Manitoba, the "Polar Bear Capital of the World," residents leave vehicles unlocked in case they come face to face with a polar bear - so they have a way to escape.

**This is unlikely to happen in Tucson.**

So please:

Lock your vehicle
Remove any firearms
Remove any packages or keep them out of sight
