Organized Retail Theft Arrest
In late October, 2022, TPD's Operations Division South Neighborhood Crimes Section (ODS NCS) was contacted by the area loss prevention manager for a local retailer. That person relayed information regarding a habitual shoplifter involved in five separate incidents accounting for approximately $3,000 in loss to the business. During the most recent incident, a store employee was able to get good photos of the suspect and Detective Gradias was able to identify him.
In November, ODS officers located the suspect while on an unrelated call. Detective Gradias issued the case and the suspect was charged with Aggravated Shoplifting and booked into the Pima County Jail.
Due to the work on this case, he was later identified as the suspect in another string of shopliftings from another retailer. The investigation is ongoing; however, to date, the number of incidents totals nine, with combined losses of approximately $3,900.

Operations Division South Divisional Advisory Committee
On December 13, 2022, ODS held its end-of-year Divisional Advisory Committee meeting, hosted by Cholla High School. The student council helped with registration and seating; the Cholla High School JROTC presented the colors; and the Cholla High School Mariachi Band kicked off the meeting, playing for over 100 attendees.
Speakers included Lt. Justin Lane from the Counter Narcotics Alliance, who addressed the dangers of fentanyl as well as other issues facing the community. He was followed by the city's Director of Housing and Community Development, Liz Morales, who discussed the city's plan to address unsheltered issues.
ODS Captain Mickey Petersen gave an update on staffing and programs to address violent crime. The event ended with a question-and-answer session. We want to thank the speakers, attendees, and Cholla High School, who made this a very special event.
Also in December, ODS members helped Sister José Women's Center deliver over 100 meals. Our members attended and provided support and/or toys to more than 20 holiday events in the division, including this ODS member, Officer Eduardo Dauz, speaking to a warmly dressed ODS resident at a holiday event.

Member Highlight
On the afternoon of September 11, 2022, ODS officers responded to a shots fired call. Sergeants Esquivel and Dragon were the first to arrive and relayed suspect vehicle information to other units. It was determined that a person had been shot and driven to the hospital by a relative.
Officer Valenzuela responded to the hospital. Officer Vasquez took incident command at the scene, conducting a thorough investigation and collecting surveillance video and shell casings from the area. Officers Mitchell, Hermosa, and Hajomar also remained on scene, speaking with witnesses.
The shooting was determined to be drug-related, and detectives from the Counter Narcotics Alliance (CNA) responded as well. Officer Vasquez remained on scene well after the end of her shift to preserve the integrity of the investigation, and CNA detectives relayed to her chain of command that her organized and detailed briefing was integral to their investigation.
All involved played a vital role in ensuring the investigation was thorough and accurate. These ODS officers displayed TPD values of teamwork, excellence, and leadership, and are to be commended for their actions during this call for service.

Crime Prevention Tip
Want to deter a burglar?
Leaving a loud TV or radio on can fool burglars into thinking you're home. Even better, you may want to put these devices (and your lights) on a timer, to imitate your patterns when you're at home.
