Tucson Seeks Community Input for Roadmapping Zero Waste
The City of Tucson's Environmental and General Services Department (EGSD) seeks community feedback on Zero Waste values, priorities, and incentives in developing Tucson’s Zero Waste roadmap.
The seven-minute, digital survey is open from Sept. 9 to Sept. 30. Valuable community insight will help the City create a roadmap to reduce the amount of waste created in Tucson.
In Sept. 2020, the Mayor and City Council adopted a resolution declaring a climate emergency and establishing goals of carbon neutrality by 2030, 50 percent waste diversion by 2030, and Zero Waste by 2050.
In the fall of 2021, EGSD took the first step toward reaching this goal by beginning the first phase of the Zero Waste Plan, the Zero Waste Roadmap. This roadmap will help EGSD outline what should be included in the Zero Waste Plan. This plan will identify alternatives for diverting waste from landfills, waste reduction, and local reuse and recycling. The Zero Waste Plan will convert the region’s more linear economy to one that is more circular—treating waste as a resource while minimizing the community’s carbon footprint.
EGSD is committed to engaging all segments of the community to ensure the alternatives considered for the Zero Waste Plan are financially feasible and, more importantly, Tucson-centric. For the City to meet its goal, it is critical to gain insight from the Tucson community on their ideas and interest in opportunities to reduce waste through more local and sustainable waste management practices and increased reuse and recycling options.
