MAYOR RAISES MAJOR FUNDING FOR TUCSON MILLION TREES PROGRAM - Mayor Regina Romero recently announced a pair of major donations to the Tucson Million Trees Program. The Mayor announced a $100,000 boost to the program when a $50,000 multi-year pledge by the Southwest Gas Foundation was matched dollar-for-dollar by another philanthropic gift. Additionally, Mayor Romero and Mister Car Wash CEO John Lai partnered to raise a quarter of a million dollars to fund the program. Mister Car Wash donated an initial $100,000 to kickstart the fund and is committed an additional $50,000 in funding. “Today we are seeing what is possible when the public and private sector come together to act on climate,” said Tucson Mayor Regina Romero. “Increased urban heat is a result of greenhouse gas emissions, low tree canopy, and increased paved surfaces, and our historically underserved neighborhoods are in urgent need of urban shade.” Under Mayor Romero’s leadership, the City of Tucson set a goal of planting one million trees by 2030 to help address extreme heat and advance the City’s climate action goals. To date, more than 45,000 trees have been planted or distributed and half a million dollars has been raised through private sector donations.
