TUCSON WATER’S ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE KICKS OFF MONSOON SEASON WITH THE SANTA CRUZ SOUND EXPERIENCE ON DIA DE SAN JUAN
TUCSON (JUNE 24, 2022) – Tucson Water, in coordination with the Dia de San Juan Planning Committee, MSA Annex, and local Artist-In-Residence Alex! Jimenez, will provide a series of fun and engaging activities for Tucson’s annual Dia de San Juan celebrations this Friday.
Starting at 5:30 PM, the Dia De San Juan Fiesta will take place at Mission Garden (946 W. Mission Lane). There will be a blessing, dignitaries, food trucks, entertainment, children's activities, and community resources set within the garden at the base of Sentinel Peak. Tucson Water’s Hydration Station will keep participants hydrated with cool water.
Starting at 6:00 PM, Tucson Water's Artist-In-Residence, Alex! Jimenez, will host a Monsoon Rain Tunnel experience at the Mercado District’s MSA Annex Summer Night Market (267 S. Avenida del Convento). Cool off with misters and the sound of rain as you walk (or bike) through this 10’x20’ tunnel on your way to the night market. Tucson Water will also host a table with giveaways and conservation information for the entire family.
At 7:00 PM, Tucson Water presents the Santa Cruz Sound Experience. Join us under the Cushing Street Bridge and walk through a surround sound audio installation and video animation experience by Alex! Jimenez with a live performance by DJ Dirtyverbs. The audio experience will mix storm sounds from Tucson Water’s YouTube Chubasco Channel. Alex! Jimenez and Tucson Water will also premier the Monsoon MixTape compilation including an original music score by six local artists.
This art installation is designed to activate the Santa Cruz River with the sounds of water. It’s not only a call to the rain with sound but also honors the memory of water in the Santa Cruz River. People can enjoy a moment of pause with the sound of abundant rain in the desert. - Alex! Jimenez
Tucson Water’s collaboration with Alex! is about engaging the public in new ways and elevating voices that honor and celebrate water’s importance in our community. We are thrilled to be supporting this work and hope people will come out to see a truly unique expression of Tucson’s water culture. - James MacAdam, Tucson Water Administrator, Public Information and Conservation
