CITY OF TUCSON ANNOUNCES JOHN P. KMIEC AS DIRECTOR OF TUCSON WATER
Tucson City Manager Michael Ortega, with concurrence from the Mayor and City Council, has named John P. Kmiec as director of Tucson Water. Director Kmiec is a longtime water leader in Arizona. His career spans four decades, with an emphasis on water resource management, utility leadership, and addressing water quality challenges for the Tucson community.
Throughout his career, and during his tenure as the director of Marana Water from 2012-2019, Director Kmiec amplified efforts to shape Arizona’s long-term vision and policy about sustainable water supplies, water quality, and the principle that all water has value.
"Given his extensive experience, John is an outstanding choice to lead our internationally-recognized water utility and an excellent addition to my executive leadership team," said City Manager Michael Ortega. "John is a passionate advocate for water recycling and innovative water technology, and he will continue to keep Tucson Water on the leading edge of water conservation and delivery."
As a strategic and tactical leader, Director Kmiec serves as an appointed member of Governor Ducey’s Water Augmentation, Innovation, and Conservation Committee; sits on the Board of Directors for the National WateReuse Association; and is a director on the AZ Water Association Board.
“I am humbled and excited to be selected as the next director of Tucson Water. It is an honor to work together with a visionary Mayor and Council, an outstanding City of Tucson leadership team, and the dedicated employees of Tucson Water," Kmiec said. "We will continue to move forward as national leaders in water resource management and conservation. Our community is our strength and excellent service is our mission. Together, we can ensure a safe and secure water future for all Tucsonans.”
Tucson Water serves more than 740,000 people in the Tucson basin and has implemented one of the most successful and notable water conservation programs in the United States. In 2019, Tucson Water was inducted into the Leading Utilities of the World Network and in 2021 was awarded the U.S. Water Prize for Outstanding Public Sector Organization.
