TUCSON PART OF JOINT EFFORT TO CONSERVE COLORADO RIVER WATER - The City of Tucson and the Gila River Indian Community have entered into a cooperative effort to allocate water resources available to the two communities in a manner meant to immediately address the ongoing crisis affecting Colorado River water supplies. The Tucson City Council voted last Thursday to give back about a third of its allocation of Central Arizona Project (CAP) water to help drought-suffering Lake Mead's water levels. The council agreed to give the City Attorney’s Office, Tucson Water, and other city staff the authority to negotiate with other cities, tribes, and other water users to come up with a plan to save enough Colorado River water to keep the lake from quickly falling too deep into shortage territory. Tucson Mayor Regina Romero says our city is in a good position to make this decision, since there's about a decade of CAP water stored underground. Phoenix currently is leaving some of its CAP supply in Lake Mead under a similar plan to help the lake. From the Arizona Daily Star Read the news release
