CITY HIRES CHIEF EQUITY OFFICER - After a national recruitment and competitive process, City Manager Michael Ortega recently appointed Laurice Walker as the City of Tucson’s first chief equity officer. Walker will lead the newly created Office of Equity and develop a comprehensive framework to advance equity in all aspects of City operations. Walker also will evaluate best practices in cities across the country and develop recommendations to address existing race and socioeconomic-based inequities in service and infrastructure delivery throughout Tucson. CITY HIRING POSITIONS IN NEW LABOR STANDARDS UNIT OF THE BUSINESS SERVICES DEPARTMENT - The City of Tucson is currently recruiting for the newly created positions of wage/revenue investigator, wage/tax auditor, and wage/finance manager. These positions will add staff to the Labor Standards Unit at the City of Tucson, which was created to fulfill the requirements of the voter-approved Tucson Minimum Wage Act. The new unit's purpose is to receive complaints from aggrieved individuals and interested parties, initiate investigations of employers and hiring entities, initiate enforcement actions, periodically conduct studies of the City’s low-wage workers for the purpose of guiding the department’s targeted enforcement efforts, educate employers of their obligations, and educate employees of their rights. The Tucson Minimum Wage Act establishes a local minimum hourly wage of $13, which took effect April 1, 2022, increasing to $15 an hour by Jan. 1, 2025. Thereafter, it will increase annually based on the rate of inflation and rise automatically to match any higher federal or state minimum wage. Additionally, the Act includes components that protect employees from wage theft and misclassification. NEW SPLASH PAD OPEN AT UDALL PARK (VIDEO) - The City of Tucson recently celebrated the opening of its newest splash pad at Morris K. Udall Park, 7290 E. Tanque Verde Road. Watch the fun by following the link below. This marks the City's fifth splash pad, which was made possible through Tucson Delivers 2018 voter-approved Proposition 407 bond funds and Impact Fees. TAKE A FREE WATER AEROBICS CLASS WITH PARKS AND RECREATION - Tucson Parks and Recreation invites you to try out a drop-in water aerobics class for free. The department will be offering the new class on Friday, April 8, 9-9:45 a.m., at Clements Pool, 8155 E. Poinciana Drive, and on Friday, April 15, 10-10:45 a.m., at Sunnyside Pool, 1725 E. Bilby Road. Water aerobics offers cardiovascular, muscular, and weight loss benefits, in addition to keeping your bones and joints healthy. No swimming skills are necessary. The class will be conducted in chest-high water. Bring appropriate swim attire, a towel, and a water bottle. Spots are limited based on the size of the pool.
