TRAFFIC ALERT: PROPOSITION 101 'TUCSON DELIVERS BETTER STREETS' REPAVING PROJECTS - Two roadway repaving projects are scheduled to begin this month as part of the voter-approved Proposition 101 "Tucson Delivers Better Streets" program. Today, Feb. 10, crews under contract with the Department of Transportation and Mobility (DTM), are starting work on Ft. Lowell Road, from Country Club Road to Alvernon Way. During this work, Fort Lowell Road will maintain one travel lane in each direction. This project is scheduled to be completed by the beginning of March. Tomorrow, Feb. 11, crews will begin work on Glenn Street, from Alvernon Way to Swan Road. Glenn will close to one travel lane, and a pilot vehicle will escort vehicles through the work zone. This project is also scheduled to be completed by the beginning of March. Tucson Delivers Better Streets is a $100 million improvement program made possible by Tucson voters who approved a half-cent sales tax increase in May 2017. Read the news release
BLACK HISTORY MONTH PROFILE: RICHARD “HIGGIE” HIGGINBOTHAM - As part of our local Black History Month profiles, we focus today on Richard “Higgie” Higginbotham. His career included positions with Tucson Parks and Recreation and the Department of Corrections. He was also a key representative on the Pro Neighborhood Development and Grant Board. For many years, he worked as a high school and college sports official and was an accomplished senior Olympian who competed in many sporting events, winning more than 125 medals. Higginbotham volunteered in the Tucson community, and his efforts were recognized with a dedication and naming of the Donna R. Liggins Center gymnasium in his honor. He died in 2005. HHW/DOCUMENT SHREDDING EVENT THIS WEEKEND - The City of Tucson's Environmental and General Services Department (EGSD) is hosting its monthly Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection Event this Saturday, Feb. 12, from 8 a.m.-noon, at Pima College West Campus, 2202 W. Anklam Road. City residents can drop off HHW, electronic waste, paper documents for shredding (limit 3 boxes), and glass bottles and jars at no charge. Unknown chemicals will not be accepted. The event is free for City of Tucson residents with proof of address. Residents from Marana, Oro Valley, Sahuarita, and unincorporated Pima County will be charged a $10 fee to drop off materials. EGSD hosts HHW collection events on the second Saturday of every month in different areas across Tucson. COVID-19 UPDATE AND VACCINATION INFORMATION - Today's, Feb. 10, COVID-19 dashboard from the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) adds 7,379 new cases and 165 deaths. ADHS has an interactive map with vaccine distribution sites (link below), and there are multiple locations throughout Tucson, including the Tucson Convention Center. So far, 5.43 million people in Arizona, or 75.6% of the population, have received at least one dose of the vaccine, and more than 4.75 million people are fully vaccinated with both doses.
