CITY OF TUCSON AND PIMA COUNTY TEAM UP FOR JOB FAIR NEXT WEEK - The City of Tucson and Pima County are hiring for dozens of jobs that potential applicants can explore at a job fair Tuesday, Jan. 11, from 10 a.m.-6 p.m., at the Kino Event Center, 2805 E. Ajo Way. City of Tucson jobs create a positive change in the community and offer a wide range of benefits, including a pension plan, medical and dental coverage, and paid parental leave. Job-seekers will be able to apply on-site at a bank of computers set up for the job fair. Many of the departments that are hiring also will have staff on hand to answer questions. TAKE THE REIMAGINING COMMUNITY SAFETY SURVEY - The City of Tucson is partnering with the American Friends Service Committee for the Reimagining Community Safety Survey. This will help inform the Community Safety, Health and Wellness Program and tackle racial injustice and inequity for communities of color. The City will use its findings to drive progress toward a more equitable justice system by organizing affected communities in Tucson to generate their own evidence of what constitutes safety in their neighborhoods. This extensive community outreach and input are vital for the City of Tucson to better serve its residents. The survey will be accepting responses for the next six months. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR ANNUAL HOMELESS POINT-IN-TIME COUNT - The City of Tucson, Tucson Pima Collaboration to End Homelessness (TPCH), and University of Arizona Southwest Institute for Research on Women (UA-SIROW) invite volunteers to participate in Everyone Counts! The 2022 point-in-time count will run from from 6-11 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 26. The count is an annual tally of individuals and families experiencing homelessness in Pima County on a given day. Volunteers must participate in a mandatory virtual training prior to the event. Teams will canvas assigned routes around the community and conduct brief surveys. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old, have comfort and experience using a smartphone or tablet, and have a desire to help end homelessness. HHW/DOCUMENT SHREDDING EVENT THIS WEEKEND - The City of Tucson's Environmental and General Services Department (EGSD) is hosting its monthly Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection Event this Saturday, Jan. 8, from 8 a.m.-noon, at the Eastside Service Center, 7575 E. Speedway Blvd. (attendees should turn north on Prudence to access event). City residents can drop off HHW, electronic waste, paper documents for shredding (limit 3 boxes), and glass bottles and jars at no charge. Unknown chemicals will not be accepted. The event is free for City of Tucson residents with proof of address. Residents from Marana, Oro Valley, Sahuarita, and unincorporated Pima County will be charged a $10 fee to drop off materials. EGSD hosts HHW collection events on the second Saturday of every month in different areas across Tucson. OUTDOOR ICE SKATING ENDS THIS WEEKEND - Rio Nuevo and the City of Tucson invite you to skate on Tucson's outdoor ice rink before it closes for the season on Sunday, Jan. 9. Tucson Holiday Ice is located at 260 S. Church Ave., in front of the Tucson Convention Center Ticket Office. Tickets can be purchased online and at the TCC Ticket Office. Each session starts at a designated time and lasts for 90 minutes. Admission for adults is $17 per session, children under 12 are $12, and skate assists can be rented on-site for $5. Skates are included with the ticket price and begin at size 8 for children and run as large as men's size 15. Socks are required, and gloves and a mask are highly recommended. COVID-19 UPDATE AND VACCINATION INFORMATION - Today's, Jan. 6, COVID-19 dashboard from the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) adds an unusually high 10,679 new cases and 16 deaths. The extremely high number reported today reflects cases not being processed on New Year’s Day, but the day-by-day cases curve shows a significant increase. ADHS has an interactive map with vaccine distribution sites (link below), and there are multiple locations throughout Tucson, including the Tucson Convention Center. So far, more than 5.08 million people in Arizona, or 75.3% of the population, have received at least one dose of the vaccine, and more than 4.39 million people are fully vaccinated with both doses.
