CITY OF TUCSON ELECTION RESULTS - City of Tucson voters yesterday, Nov. 2, selected Tucson City Council members representing three wards. Unofficial results show Kevin Dahl has been elected to represent Ward 3, Council Member Richard Fimbres was re-elected in Ward 5, and Council Member Steve Kozachik was re-elected in Ward 6. Voters also approved Proposition 206, which will gradually raise the minimum wage in the city to $15 an hour by 2025. Proposition 410, which if passed would raise Mayor and Council salaries by $12,000 a year (to $54,000 for the mayor and $36,000 for council members), is too close to call with the unofficial results, posted just after 8 p.m. yesterday, showing it passing by 153 votes. STATE OFFERS LIFELINE TO STRUGGLING ARIZONA HOMEOWNERS - The Arizona Department of Housing (ADOH) announced $197 million in funding is now available to eligible low-income homeowners struggling to pay their mortgage and other home-related expenses. The money to create the Homeowner Assistance Fund (HAF) comes to Arizona from the U.S. Treasury, as part of the American Rescue Plan Act. HAF is meant to help Arizona’s low-income homeowners who have experienced financial hardships related to COVID-19 after Jan. 21, 2020. The assistance is intended to prevent foreclosure, but it also helps pay past due utilities, internet services, property taxes, insurance, homeowners association fees, and more. The funds are available and ready to be distributed. Homeowners can find out if they’re income-eligible for HAF assistance and apply online at the website linked below. FEEDBACK MEETINGS CONTINUE TOMORROW ON PROPOSED BROADWAY BOULEVARD TRANSIT IMPROVEMENTS - Transit improvements are coming to Broadway Boulevard in May 2022. The goal of the upcoming Broadway transit improvement project is to improve service quality from the City of Tucson's east side to downtown. The proposed rapid bus service on Broadway Boulevard would offer a more efficient way to travel from Houghton Road to Sixth Avenue. At a series of in-person and virtual meetings, the public is having the opportunity to provide feedback on the proposed service elements and amenities, service frequency, bus stop locations, and more. TUCSON PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION ACCEPTING AWARD NOMINATIONS - The Tucson Parks and Recreation Commission is accepting nominations of individuals and organizations, both from within the Tucson Parks and Recreation department and the community, who have offered creative approaches in continuing to help our parks system provide high-quality facilities, programs, and services for Tucsonans of all ages and abilities. Nominations should emphasize a significant contribution to the department, such as mentoring of staff and volunteers, budget-saving ideas, creative efficiencies, recognition of milestone events (such as number of volunteer hours), or recognition of employees who give to the community and to the department. COVID-19 UPDATE AND VACCINATION INFORMATION - The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) yesterday, Nov. 2, accepted the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices’ recommendation that kids ages 5-11 be vaccinated against COVID-19 with the Pfizer-BioNTech pediatric vaccine. Meanwhile, today's, Nov. 3, COVID-19 dashboard from the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) adds 2,180 new cases and 124 deaths. Today’s death numbers appear high due to yesterday’s data merging and record matching. ADHS has an interactive map with vaccine distribution sites (link below), and there are multiple locations throughout Tucson. So far, more than 4.4 million people in Arizona, or 61.3.% of the population, have received at least one dose of the vaccine, and 3.98 million people are fully vaccinated with both doses.
