DRIVE-THRU HALLOWEEN EVENTS - Several Halloween events are scheduled over the next few days. At least two of those are drive-thru events. The City of Tucson Parks and Recreation department will host its free "Rollin' Haunt" event on Saturday, Oct. 30, from 4-7 p.m. (while candy supplies last), at the Tucson Rodeo Grounds, 4823 S. 6th Ave. (enter at 3rd Avenue and Irvington Road). The event will be filled with Halloween treats, and there will be plenty of fun costumes and characters for the kids to enjoy. All children in vehicles will receive a candy bag as they exit the event. To avoid traffic congestion, participants are asked not to line up early. Another drive-thru event will be held Oct. 31, from 4:30-11:30 p.m., at Tucson Dragway, 12000 S. Houghton Road. Dress up with your family and enjoy this socially distanced way to trick or treat. There will be a marked parade route to drive your car down the dragstrip while local businesses, community leaders, racers, and families give away pre-bagged candy to you and your family. The candy will be handed out with a stick to provide a safe way to enjoy the night and still get your kids some candy. There is a $10 charge for this event, and you can buy tickets online by following the last link at the end of this story., Read the "Rollin Haunt" news release Rollin' Haunt Rollin' Haunt Facebook event Tucson Dragway Drive-Thru Trick or Treat tickets
SWEETWATER WETLANDS CONTROLLED BURN NEXT WEEK - Tucson Water and the Tucson Fire Department will hold the annual controlled burn at Sweetwater Wetlands on Wednesday, Nov. 3, from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. The Wetlands will be closed to the public for the day and reopen Nov. 4. The annual burn is the first to be held since March 2020. As a result, it will be larger than usual, spanning multiple basins across 17 acres. The burn will take place early enough so plenty of healthy habitat will be available during the winter migratory bird season. People who are sensitive to smoke or ash generated by the controlled burn are asked to take precautionary measures or avoid the area. Since 1999, Tucson Water and the Tucson Fire Department have conducted annual controlled burns at Sweetwater Wetlands. The burns have been used successfully to help control invasive species of flora and fauna and preserve important open water habitat, while providing valuable fire suppression training for regional wildland firefighters. COVID-19 UPDATE AND VACCINATION INFORMATION - Today's, Oct. 28, COVID-19 dashboard from the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) adds 2,795 new cases and -11 deaths. The subtraction of deaths from the dashboard is the result of a low number of additions and routine data cleaning. ADHS has an interactive map with vaccine distribution sites (link below), and there are multiple locations throughout Tucson. So far, more than 4.36 million people in Arizona, or 60.7% of the population, have received at least one dose of the vaccine, and 3.83 million people are fully vaccinated with both doses. Meanwhile, a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advisory panel this week voted to move forward a recommendation to the full FDA that regulators authorize Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine for 5-to-11-year-olds. If the FDA approves, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) must also approve the emergency use authorization.
