CITY OF TUCSON OFFICE OF ECONOMIC INITIATIVES TO MARK MANUFACTURING MONTH
Manufacturing Month, held nationally in October, is an opportunity to show the reality of modern manufacturing careers as companies and educational institutions around the country open their doors to students, parents, teachers, and community members. The City of Tucson Office of Economic Initiatives and the Tucson Metro Chamber will host a Manufacturing Day event on Friday, Oct. 29.
Designed to inspire the next generation to enter careers in modern manufacturing, Manufacturing Day in Tucson will bring a group of Big Brothers Big Sisters students from Amphitheater High School to Sonoran Stitch Factory, CAID Industries, and Pima Community College Downtown Campus Center of Excellence in Applied Technology. Students will spend time at each of the manufacturing tour locations and then listen to presentations on available manufacturing career programs at Pima Community College. Instructors at PCC will provide hands-on demonstrations in automotive maintenance, welding, machining, and robotics.
Manufacturing Month and corresponding events bring to light the need for manufacturing workers. According to the Manufacturing Institute and Deloitte, between now and 2030, 4 million manufacturing jobs need to be filled. The Bureau of Economic Analysis and the Bureau of Labor Statistics report the average annual income of U.S. manufacturing employees was $88,406 in 2019. On Sept. 30, President Biden proclaimed Oct. 1 to be National Manufacturing Day to “commit to strengthening and supporting the American manufacturers and hardworking manufacturing employees of today as well as the manufacturers and workers of the future.”
“The tours are a fantastic way for us to offer students a first-hand look inside our local manufacturing facilities,” said Barbra Coffee, Economic Initiatives director for the City of Tucson. “We aim to inspire future generations to enter manufacturing careers which are certainly in high demand and offer great earning potential.”
