CITY CONDUCTING NATIONAL RECRUITMENT FOR HOUSING FIRST PROGRAM DIRECTOR - Tucson's Mayor and Council passed the Community Safety Pilot Program on June 30, 2020, with the purpose of serving the community through a Housing First framework. Housing First is an approach prioritizing permanent housing for people experiencing homelessness, with the belief that people need basic necessities, like food and a place to live, before attending to other needs. As part of the Community Safety Program, the Housing First Program director will support relevant City departments with a Housing First approach to provide safety and mental health services to Tucson residents. This newly created position will collaborate with stakeholders to develop and implement a strategic plan to end chronic homelessness, including specific targets and timelines. Ideal candidates will have five or more years of experience operating housing programs focused primarily on the provision of housing and shelter based in the Housing First and Harm Reduction models. Education qualifications include a bachelor’s degree in social work, human services, sociology, public administration, or a related degree. Applications for this position are open until filled, with the first review date the week of Monday, Aug. 9. A tentative date to begin the selection process is set for the week of Monday, Aug. 23. REGIONAL TRANSIT PROVIDERS TO HOST JOINT JOB FAIR THIS WEEKEND - From golf cart shuttles to 40-foot buses, driver applicants are invited to find their fit at a regional transit job fair. The joint event includes driving opportunities with the Sun Tran family of services, University of Arizona Parking & Transportation Services, and the Tucson Unified School District. The pandemic affected many workers, including transit drivers. Each organization participating in the job fair is seeking new hires to meet renewed ridership demand as our community recovers from the pandemic and as we approach the start of school. The Regional Transit Job Fair will be held Saturday, July 24, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m., at Innovation Tech High School, 3300 S. Park Ave. At the job fair, attendees can explore vehicles from each transportation mode, learn about benefits packages, bonus programs, the hiring and training process, and fill out an application on the spot. CONNECTING FOR SUCCESS: WEBINAR SERIES FOR SMALL BUSINESSES - The City of Tucson's Office of Economic Initiatives (ConnectTucson) webinar series, "Connecting for Success," is held monthly, featuring a guest speaker, presentation, and Q&A. The next webinar will be Monday, July 26, from 3-4 p.m. In this edition, hear from some of Tucson’s finest legacy business owners, with a special welcome from Tucson Mayor Regina Romero. Learn how the City of Tucson plans to recognize and assist legacy businesses moving forward. The presentation will be recorded and posted on the ConnectTucson website the following day. ENJOY SUMMER FUN AT REID PARK ZOO DURING SUMMER SAFARI NIGHTS - Reid Park Zoo’s annual Summer Safari Nights runs every Saturday, 5:30-8:30 p.m., through Aug. 15. Enjoy the Zoo during the cooler evenings, with events featuring live music from local bands, games, animal chats, wildlife activities, carousel rides, and themed evenings. Food and drink specials also will be available. The theme this Saturday night, July 24, is "Dog Days and Astronomy Summer." Throughout history, stars have guided both humans and animals in navigating their world, preparing for the seasons and influencing survival behaviors. Beat the heat for some down-to-earth fun during the dog days of summer. Spend time with the Zoo’s pack of African wild dogs and discover how species follow the stars.
