PROPOSED CHANGE TO RATES FOR TUCSON WATER CUSTOMERS IN UNINCORPORATED PIMA COUNTY - Tucson's Mayor and Council last month gave notice of its intention to implement a differential rate structure for Tucson Water customers located in unincorporated Pima County. The public has a chance to comment during two town halls this month. The virtual meetings are being held tonight, May 12, and May 25. The town halls, from 5:30-7 p.m., will provide opportunities to learn more about the proposal and ask questions. An online survey is also available. EMERGENCY BROADBAND BENEFIT PROGRAM ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS - The Federal Communications Commission just launched a temporary program to help families and households struggling to afford Internet service during the COVID-19 pandemic. Starting today, May 12, the Emergency Broadband Benefit (EBB) will provide a discount of up to $50 per month toward broadband service for eligible households and up to $75 per month for households on qualifying tribal lands. Eligible households can also receive a one-time discount of up to $100 to purchase a laptop, desktop computer, or tablet from participating providers. Eligible households can enroll through a participating broadband provider or directly with the Universal Service Administrative Company using an online or mail-in application. NEW APP TO STREAMLINE ROOFTOP SOLAR PERMITTING PROCESS - Pima County and the City of Tucson will relaunch the Solar One Stop as a portal to the new Solar Automated Permit Processing Plus Platform (SolarAPP+) that automates the approval of residential solar permits. The County and City are some of the first and the largest jurisdictions in the United States to help the Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) pilot the permitting software. It was created with help from the International Code Council, UL, the solar industry, the Solar Foundation, and others. Using SolarAPP+, registered solar contractors can submit their system designs for immediate code compliance review and subsequent permits. The app launched today, May 12, for widespread use in Pima County and the City of Tucson, and it will be available nationally in June. TUCSON'S OFFICE OF ECONOMIC INITIATIVES CELEBRATING ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT WEEK - The City of Tucson's Office of Economic Initiatives (ConnectTucson) joins the International Economic Development Council (IEDC) and the Arizona Association for Economic Development (AAED) in celebrating Economic Development Week, underway now through May 14. Economic Development Week was created by the IEDC in 2016 to increase awareness of local programs that create jobs, advance career development opportunities, and improve the quality of life in communities everywhere. The theme of AAED’s Economic Development Week celebration is “Collaborative Arizona Communities.” The Office of Economic Initiatives has collaborated with national corporations to create 194 jobs, retain 375 jobs, and bring $77.3 million in capital investment to Tucson in the first quarter of 2021. CITY PROCUREMENT STAFF NAMED BUYER AND MANAGER OF THE YEAR - The City of Tucson's Business Services Department is proud to announce that Senior Contract Officer Norma Camacho has been named the Buyer of the Year by the Copper Chapter of NIGP (The Institute for Public Procurement). In addition, Procurement Manager Jenn Myers has been named the Manager of the Year. Each March, the Copper Chapter of NIGP accepts nominations for the Buyer and Manager of the Year awards. These awards recognize individuals who actively support and promote the public procurement profession, demonstrate their passion for their careers, and maintain high professional standards. NIGP is an international, membership-based nonprofit organization providing support to the public procurement profession.
