You are receiving this email as you have asked to be informed of any progress regarding the Gene C. Reid Park and Reid Park Zoo Community Conversation. Below is an email that was sent to Tucson Mayor and City Council today, April 13, 2021.
Honorable Mayor Romero and Council Members,
We are 10 days from the conclusion of the 45-Day “pause” on the Reid Park Zoo expansion and we have covered a lot of ground to date:
- The Core Stakeholder Group (CSG) was established based on the Mayor & Council action of March 9, 2021. The CSG continues to meet and seek consensus on a win-win option; weighing a wide range of inputs including data on various options, results of the Community Dialogue Circles, and the Community Survey.
-
Community Dialogue Circles were held on 4/10 with about 135 participants, including the facilitators. The main goal of the Dialogue Circles was to gain information on the most important values or goals that the CSG should consider when seeking consensus.
- The Community Survey closes tonight at midnight and has generated over 10,000 responses. Preliminary review indicates that it has already reached saturation (no new insights are expected), is a representative sample of the community across multiple demographics, and has a 99% confidence level with a 2% error rate. Further, the immediate neighbors of Reid Park (Zip Codes: 85711, 85713, and 85716) comprise 24% of the survey responses and are 23% of City Population. In short, it has met and exceeded our needs. After the survey closes, staff will compile and analyze the results and provide them to the CSG.
- Park user intercept surveys were conducted 4/9 through 4/11.
- Comments submitted to the Open Input Portal are being coded (categorized) and summarized.
- Advertising of the Community Conversation has included:
- Initial Press Release
- English and Spanish websites with the survey available in both languages
- Frequent multi-channel social media posts, including through our partners with Arizona Bilingual and Latinas Arizona
- Facebook ads directed at Spanish speakers within 10 miles of Reid Park
- Ads purchased in the Arizona Daily Star and La Estrella, with online clickable access to the survey
- A postcard mailer to all addresses within 1 mile of the park
- Three rounds of signs installed at the site, including some large banners and signs with maps and information on impacts at each potential expansion location
- Park user intercept surveys in English and Spanish
- Appearances on Azteca TV.
Our next steps are:
- Support the CSG as it concludes its work. This will be completed by April 23, 2021
- Prepare a summary report and information for Mayor & Council.
- Conduct a Study Session at the May 4, 2021 Mayor and Council Meeting.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Best, Tim
