REMINDER: CITYWIDE #MASKUPTUCSON FREE MOBILE MASK DISTRIBUTION TONIGHT (VIDEO) - Thanks to the Mayor and Tucson City Council, the City is hosting mobile mask giveaway events at multiple locations and times throughout the community as an opportunity for residents to obtain washable face coverings for themselves and their families. The first event will be tonight, Sept. 17, from 5-7 o'clock, at the Quincie Douglas Center parking lot, 1575 E. 36th St. Adult and child sizes will be available, and the child size has adjustable ear pieces that can easily fit a small adult. MORE THAN $700K IN CARES FUNDING AVAILABLE FOR TUCSON ARTISTS AND ARTS ORGANIZATIONS - Artists and nonprofit arts organizations are among those hit economically by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and relief is available. To help support this community, the City of Tucson's We Are One/Somos Uno Resiliency Fund is offering more than $700,000 in grants to the local arts and culture community. The money comes from the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. Applications are due by Oct 5. The grant process is being facilitated by the Arts Foundation for Tucson and Southern Arizona (AFTSA). Follow the link below for more information. AFTSA
COVID-19 THURSDAY UPDATE SHOWS SPIKE IN NUMBERS - As of today, Sept. 17, Arizona now has 211,660 positive coronavirus cases, with 1,753 new cases reported today (up from 695 yesterday). The total number of cases includes people who have recovered. Of that number, 23,563 cases are in Pima County (up 676 from yesterday). There have been 5,409 COVID-19 deaths in Arizona (38 reported today), and 612 of those occurred in Pima County (10 reported today). Meanwhile, the City of Tucson maintains an up-to-date COVID-19 website (link below) that includes information for businesses, residents, and more. The site is updated as information evolves. FUN IN THE MUD (VIDEO) - Watch Reid Park Zoo's youngest African elephants enjoy their mud wallow on a hot, Tucson afternoon. As a big sister, Nandi has been a great role model to her little sister Penzi, showing her how to use her trunk, teaching her important elephant etiquette, and demonstrating the art of proper splashing. DOWNTOWN LINKS TRAFFIC UPDATE - On Sunday, Sept. 20, Downtown Links Constructors will begin a nightly soil export operation from the vacant lot north of Broadway, adjacent to the Aviation Bikeway and West of Iron Horse Park. The operation is expected to take approximately three weeks to complete. Crews will work Sundays-Thursdays from about 8 p.m.-5 a.m. each night.
