COVID-19 EMERGENCY RENT AND UTILITY ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE - The Mayor and Tucson City Council recently allocated more than $4.5 million of Federal CARES Act dollars to fund an emergency rent and utility assistance program for City of Tucson residents struggling due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The City’s Housing and Community Development (HCD) department is partnering with several agencies to administer this program, including Primavera, Interfaith Community Services, Catholic Community Services, and International Rescue Committee. SMALL BUSINESSES, NONPROFITS, AND FAMILIES CAN RECEIVE GRANTS TO HELP DURING PANDEMIC - As part of the City of Tucson’s CARES Act funds, the Mayor and Tucson City Council approved $2.5 million for small businesses and nonprofits and $3 million for workers and families. Under the We Are One|Somos Uno Resiliency Fund, the grant program will distribute $2 million to small businesses and $500,000 to nonprofits. In partnership with the YWCA of Southern Arizona (YWCA) and the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona (CFSA), the grant program is now accepting applications. The YWCA’s Women’s Business Center will administer the small business continuity grants, up to $10,000. Nonprofit continuity grants, up to $20,000, will be administered through the CFSA. Also, workers and families can apply for financial assistance grants through the Women’s Foundation of Southern Arizona, Aug. 19-Sept. 9, as part of the same We Are One|Somos Uno Resiliency Fund. Mayor and Council approved $3 million to be distributed to workers and families negatively affected by COVID-19. The grant program will prioritize those who have not yet received any state or federal COVID-19 relief money and those whose incomes do not reach the self-sufficiency standard for Pima County. The Women’s Foundation of Southern Arizona (WFSA) will administer the grant program and will accept applications starting on Wednesday, Aug. 19, at 10 a.m., through Wednesday, Sept. 9, at 5 p.m. For more information on all the grants, follow the links below. NEW COVID-19 CASES DECREASE A BIT FROM YESTERDAY - As of today, Aug. 14, Arizona now has 191,721 positive coronavirus cases, with 928 new cases reported today (down from 1,351 yesterday). The total number of cases includes people who have recovered. Of that number, 19,164 cases are in Pima County. There have been 4,423 COVID-19 deaths in Arizona, and 524 of those occurred in Pima County. Meanwhile, the City of Tucson maintains an up-to-date COVID-19 website (link below) that includes information for businesses, residents, and even activities for kids. CAMPBELL AVENUE CLOSURE NORTH OF BROADWAY NEXT WEEK - Campbell Avenue, from Broadway to 10th Street, will be closed to the public beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 21, through about 6 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 24. The closure will be in place to allow crews to safely install an underground 90-inch-diameter storm drain on the north side of Broadway as part of the improvement project taking place from Euclid Avenue to Country Club Road. Eastbound and westbound travel on Broadway will not be affected by this closure. Southbound and northbound travel on Campbell Avenue from Sixth Street to 10th Street is open to local traffic only. SIGN-UPS CONTINUE FOR RE-IMAGINED KIDCO - Tucson Parks and Recreation is offering an all-day Re-imagined KIDCO program to help families navigate this school year during the pandemic. The program will offer on-site virtual learning monitoring and assistance during normal school hours, along with activities, games, sports, and art during after-school times. Parents of children ages 5-11 (currently enrolled in K-5th grade in the Tucson Unified or Amphi school districts) can register at the link below. Students must wear a mask and bring their own virtual learning equipment (laptops, books, etc.). The cost is $125/month for city residents and $157/month for non-city residents.
