PRIMARY ELECTION SETS THE STAGE FOR NOVEMBER'S GENERAL ELECTION - Yesterday, Aug. 4, was Election Day in Arizona. There were no City of Tucson offices being contested in the primary election, but there were many other races, including those for the U.S. Senate, Congress, Arizona Legislature, Pima County Supervisors, Pima County Sheriff, and much more. One of the biggest upsets was the apparent loss of Pima County Supervisors' Chairman Ramón Valadez to Dr. Matt Heinz in the District 2 Democratic primary. Unofficial results show Heinz won with more than 54% of the vote. Heinz will advance to face Republican Anthony Sizer in the Nov. 3 general election. ARIZONA GYMS WIN LAWSUIT AND COULD REOPEN SOON - Some Arizona gyms and fitness centers could reopen next week. In an extensive ruling yesterday, Aug. 4, Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Timothy Thomason said it was wrong for Gov. Doug Ducey to shut down these facilities indefinitely without giving them a chance to appeal, violating the constitutional due process rights of the owners. Thomason ordered the governor to provide gyms and fitness centers a prompt opportunity to apply for reopening. The process must allow gyms to attest that they can adhere to guidelines put in place by the Arizona Department of Health Services to minimize the risk of the spread of COVID-19. Thomas ruled that process must be in place within one week. A gubernatorial spokesman said the governor's lawyers are reviewing the ruling. From the Arizona Daily Star
COVID-19 WEDNESDAY UPDATE - As of today, Aug. 5, Arizona now has 182,203 positive coronavirus cases, with 1,698 new cases reported today. While the number of new cases is up from yesterday's tally, the total is much lower than what we've seen over the past few weeks if all of the lab partner data was submitted on time. The total number of cases includes people who have recovered. Of that number, 16,964 cases are in Pima County. There have been 3,932 COVID-19 deaths in Arizona, and 469 of those occurred in Pima County. Meanwhile, the City of Tucson maintains an up-to-date COVID-19 website (link below) that includes information for businesses, residents, and even activities for kids. The site is updated as information evolves. COVID-19 website
