WARD 4 COUNCILWOMAN LEE CORDINATES WITH RAYTHEON TO HELP YOUTH ON THEIR OWN STUDENTS
Students without access to a computer recently shared how difficult it has been to participate in online learning opportunities with their class while schools have been closed. With Councilwoman Lee’s coordination with Raytheon, 30 laptops, computer mice and backpacks have been donated to Youth On Their Own (YOTO) for students to have the opportunity to complete the school year.
“I’m very grateful for all of the folks who worked to make this happen so quickly,” said Councilwoman Lee.“These students are already up against so many challenges and having a laptop to be able to finish their senior year and hit the huge graduation milestone is so important for the students and for our community as a whole.”
Youth On Their Own is a dropout prevention program that supports the high school graduation and continued success of homeless, unaccompanied youth in Pima County. Youth On Their Own is a 501(c)(3) dropout prevention agency-strives to eliminate barriers to education and empower Arizona’s homeless youth to stay in school. YOTO has empowered over 16,000 homeless youth to remain in school and pursue opportunities for self-sufficiency. Their services include:
• Transportation: Bus Passes and Bicycles • Basic Needs: Food, Clothing, Hygiene Products, School Supplies • Housing Referrals • Personal Counseling • One-on-One Success Coaching • Medical, Dental and Vision Care • Employment Opportunities and Community Involvement Activities
Councilwoman Lee started organizing the Annual Shirley Scott Ward 4 Back to School Bash, however when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, she knew she had to quickly focus her attention to keeping kids in school.
"With social distancing measure and limitations on large gatherings, we put the Back to School Bash on hold this year but are doing our part to ensure our Tucson school children have the tools needed to continue their education.”
