welcomes two new team members

Two new team members joined Pima County Economic Development this month to strengthen the department’s work to support local businesses, attract investment and create new economic opportunities.

Amber Folkman joined the department Aug. 3 as Business Retention and Expansion Manager, and Nazzer Mendez joined Aug. 10 as Foreign Direct Investment and Business Attraction Manager.

Taiwan delegates 1

Pima County, Taiwanese delegation continue collaboration

A delegation from Taiwan visited Pima County for the second time to discuss ongoing and future collaboration opportunities.

The visit focused on expanding collaboration and development of the proposed joint Talent and Innovation Hub (TIH), an initiative first discussed 2025, as well as additional industry, research and cultural development opportunities. The delegation visit took place at the University of Arizona Main Campus and at the County’s Historic Courthouse on Aug. 12, 2026.

The Pima County Small Business Commission is accepting nominations for the 2026 Small Business of the Year Awards from September 1-25, 2026.

There will be awards in four categories:

  • Best Community Engagement/Impact

Export Compliance

Export compliance training set for September

The Arizona District Export Council (AzDEC) and the U.S. Commercial Service are presenting export compliance training for the trade community that brings federal experts directly to attendees.

Over two focused half-days, on Sept. 16-17, 2026, officers from the U.S. Census Bureau will cover:

  • The regulations and filing requirements of the Foreign Trade Regulations (FTR)
  • How to classify commodities using Schedule B
  • A thorough overview of export filing through the Automated Export System (AES) in the Automated Commercial Environment (ACE)

Southern Arizona’s next generation of innovators put their ideas to work during the inaugural E-SYNC (Entrepreneurship–Student Youth & Next-Generation Cohort) Youth Entrepreneurship Summit July 20-23, 2026, hosted by the Southern Arizona Technology & Entrepreneurship Center at Pima Community College.

Created to introduce young people to entrepreneurship through hands-on learning, mentorship, and real-world problem solving, E-SYNC gave students the opportunity to build confidence, develop practical business skills, and begin seeing themselves as future innovators, entrepreneurs, and community leaders.
