Esperero Wash

New culverts will help protect
Esperero Wash area from flooding

Drivers in the Catalina Foothills will soon be safer from seasonal flooding, thanks to the installation of more — and more effective — culverts at Esperero Wash.

The project, led by Pima County Transportation, will remove the two undersized corrugated metal culverts that currently provide drainage for the wash under Sunrise Drive and replace them with six concrete box culverts. Construction began Jan. 5 and is expected to be completed by the end of summer 2026.

The project will help solve an issue that dates back to the catastrophic Bighorn Fire, which swept through the Santa Catalina Mountains in the summer of 2020.

Pima County Wastewater's annual grease drive hits 100K landmark

grease collection

Pima County Wastewater Reclamation's 21st annual grease collection drive was a success! This year's event collected 5,812.5 pounds of grease — an improvement of nearly 1,500 pounds over last year's event. Since the drive launched in 2005, Wastewater has collected more than 104,000 pounds of grease.

All that grease is not only kept out of the sanitary sewer system, but is also collected into clean-burning diesel fuel. Residents who missed the Jan. 10 collection event can still recycle their grease at the County's year-round drop-off site at Agua Nueva Water Reclamation Facility.

That inaugural issue highlighted Transportation's efforts to keep the roads to Mount Lemmon open, a fresh look for the Camino de Oeste Trailhead, and the unveiling of a memorial sign at Christina-Taylor Green Memorial River Park.

Since then, the newsletter has been keeping County residents informed about important services, community programs, and upcoming events. Know someone who ought to subscribe? Share the link below!
