Ajo's beloved Curley School Gym is open to the public for the first time in more than three decades.
Pima County Parks & Recreation celebrated the opening of the newly renovated gym at a Dec. 3 dedication event in Ajo, where the long-shuttered facility served generations of elementary, middle and high school students.
Pima County Supervisor Jennifer Allen, District 3, and Parks & Recreation Director Victor Pereira spoke at the ribbon-cutting ceremony, which drew a crowd of about 100 people. It was a large gathering for the small community, which is located in the far western region of the County.
County Attorney’s Victim Services Program marks a half-century of service

That was the question – and the sentiment – heard repeatedly by police, prosecutors, and newspaper columnists in 1975 when the Pima County Attorney’s Office began focusing on the needs of victims as part of the Office’s Adult Diversion Program.
This year, the Victim Services program marks 50 years of walking hand in hand with victims through some of the most devastating moments of their lives.

SaludArte art exhibit shares stories of recovery
“Saving one life is equivalent to saving the world.”
That is one of the themes running through a SaludArte exhibit at the Tucson Museum of Art elevating the voices and experiences of people impacted by substance use, recovery, and the overdose crisis.
SaludArte is a public art initiative between the Arts Foundation for Tucson and Southern Arizona and the Pima County Health Department, focused on creatively addressing urgent public health issues through community-driven art. This year’s theme — “We Recover Together” — centers on stories of substance use, harm reduction, recovery, and resilience in Southern Arizona.

Trust for Public Land protects 20 acres inside Saguaro National Park
Next year, Pima County will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the landmark Sonoran Desert Conservation Plan, which identified the Sweetwater Preserve area as important for conservation. Trust for Public Land, in partnership with the National Park Service, has acquired 20 acres of privately owned land adjacent to Sweetwater Preserve, which will be transferred to the National Park Service and permanently added to Saguaro National Park.

Join the Nuestras Raíces Team at Flowing Wells Library on Dec. 13 at 3 p.m. for a live musical performance by TucSon Jarocho, a local group that performs the musical style of “Son Jarocho.”
As this article explains, Son Jarocho is “a traditional music and dance style from Veracruz, Mexico, blending Indigenous, African, and Spanish traditions.”
