Summerhaven Sabino Canyon Road Parking Improvements
Pima County, Ariz. (Oct. 17, 2025) – On Thursday, October 16, 2025, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), Central Federal Lands Highway Division (CFLHD), in cooperation with Pima County and Coronado National Forest, began improvements to Sabino Canyon Park Road, Summerhaven, Arizona.
The Sabino Canyon Park Road and Marshall Gulch Project is a Federal Lands Access Program (FLAP) funded project applied for by Pima County and implemented by FHWA. The project improvements include a new paved surface, roadway excavation, tree clearing, ditch construction/reconditioning to improve drainage, installation of culverts, and the installation of new street signage. Project construction includes a 75-stall paved parking lot, a public restroom, 21 on-street parking spaces, and a trail kiosk. In addition, an asphalt surface rehabilitation for approximately half a mile, as well as the installation of a 5-foot-wide pathway as part of the Arizona Trail Passage 11E: Pusch Ridge Wilderness Bypass.
The duration of the project is expected to be from October 2025 to the Summer of 2026, with an anticipated winter hiatus due to weather. A full closure of Sabino Canyon Road is planned during this project time period; dates of closure will be determined and announced based on the project pace and need. During this closure, a detour to Marshall Gulch is planned to be in place. Otherwise, delays are planned to occur intermittently Monday through Saturday from 7 am to 6 pm. The work schedule is four 10-hour days each week with a variable work week schedule. Flaggers will be on site to direct, monitor, and control traffic movements through the construction zone. Please approach the area with caution and obey all traffic control devices. Minor delays of up to 15 minutes may occur when the road is open during this work.
In the event of mechanical failure or inclement weather, the construction schedule is subject to change.
