Pima County invites comments on draft 2026 Community Wildfire Protection Plan

PIMA COUNTY, Sept. 30, 2025 - The public can weigh in on wildfire risks and strategies to protect property and resources throughout Pima County at an Oct. 7 open house from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Rincon Valley Fire District office, 14550 E. Sands Ranch Road.

The open house is part of efforts to develop a Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP), a collaborative effort to identify wildfire risks, prioritize high-risk communities, and develop strategies to protect people, property, and natural resources. The public can share their input on the plan’s development by taking the 2026 Pima County Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) Public Survey. Those comments will guide wildfire preparedness, fuel reduction projects, and community education efforts across the County.

Pima County faces unique wildfire risks: a mix of desert, grassland, and forested landscapes; the spread of highly flammable invasive species like buffelgrass; unincorporated communities with limited escape routes; tribal lands; and rapid population growth at the wildland–urban interface. Addressing these challenges requires a shared commitment from residents, agencies, and partners alike.

The CWPP process will include seven team meetings throughout the year, bringing together local agencies, fire personnel, tribal representatives, utilities, and community leaders to review data, assess wildfire risks, and shape recommendations.
