UA hosts high-tech companies from Chihuahua

The University of Arizona hosted Chihuahua Global EDC, a private nonprofit that supports foreign and national companies with nearshoring operations and diversifying supply chains, to strengthen Chihuahua-Arizona partnerships in high-tech manufacturing on August 26.

“I want to extent a gracious thank you to U of A and Justin Dutrum for the invitation to attend,” said Pima County Economic Development Director Heath Vescovi-Chiordi. “As we deepen our efforts into Mexico and cultivate new relationships to strengthen Foreign Direct Investment, opportunities like this are critical in seeing our efforts come to fruition.”

New CTE classrooms opened at Walden Grove High

Walden Grove High School in the Sahuarita Unified School District held a ribbon-cutting event on August 6 to show off the new Career Technical Education (CTE) buildings at the school.

The new 30,000-square foot building will be the first dedicated CTE space at Walden Grove.


Nano Lab tour

U of A’s new Nano Lab increases County’s
competitive edge

The University of Arizona was awarded $35 million by the Arizona Commerce Authority in 2023 for the construction of a Micro/Nano Fabrication Center on campus, and the Pima County Economic Development Team toured the construction site with Chuck Field at Kitchell Contractors Inc. on Aug. 25, 2025.

A nanofabrication center is a specialized, state-of-the-art facility that provides researchers from academia, industry, and government with access to advanced tools and clean-room environments to design, build, and test nanoscale devices and materials.

The Pima County Small Business Commission is accepting nominations for the 2025 Small Business of the Year Awards until Sept. 19.

There will be awards in four categories:

  • Best Customer Service
  • Best Workplace

  • Best Community Engagement/Impact.

Marana Insights

Vescovi-Chiordi provides insight to Marana Chamber

It was a sort of homecoming for Pima County Economic Development Director Heath Vescovi-Chiordi, who was a featured speaker at the Marana Chamber of Commerce Marana Insights meeting on August 28.

Vescovi-Chiordi started his career at the Town of Marana as an intern and worked his way through different departments in the Town, including economic development, airport manager, and assistant to the town manager before starting at Pima County in 2022.
