New documentary highlights female truck drivers' road to success

Jessica Sanders never knew she wanted to be a truck driver — until the moment she did.

“I love driving, it’s always been an outlet for me,” said Sanders, a single mom of four boys. “I always wanted to travel. But I never thought I would be a truck driver.”

Sanders is one of several women whose stories are explored in “Drive Like a Girl,” a new short documentary that examines the lives and unique experiences of women in the trucking industry — many of whom received a helping hand from Pima County's One-Stop Career Center.

Directed by local journalist and University of Arizona graduate student Samantha Callicutt, the film provides a vivid picture of what it’s like for women to work in a field that was once dominated by men.

UA video screenshot

Pima County Conservation Lands & Resources teamed up with local documentarian Lisa Molomot and University of Arizona students to produce a video series intended to support Tucson's Silverbell Road Project and explore local history.

Underneath the streets, modern cafes, and monuments of downtown Tucson are Hohokam villages, named O’odham places, a Spanish mission and presidio, Mexican houses, and American jails, all of which are just a fragment of more than 4,000 years of continuous occupation of Tucson.
