An update from Steve Kozachik, PACC Director

Vol. 1, No. 33 - August 4, 2025

We're all in this together

rescues

A week ago Saturday, we hosted a gathering of our rescue partners. As you can see from the turnout, it was well-received.

We had some breed-specific rescues (Doberman, Weimaraner, Shar Pei, for example), cat rescues, a bird rescue partner, our friends from Green Valley rescue drove up for the meeting, and we had Phoenix-based rescues come down to take part. The roughly two-hour get-together on a Saturday afternoon demonstrated the commitment we all have to finding homes for the animals in our care.

I opened the meeting by describing many of the changes that have been happening around PACC this year. One of those is an internal change related to how we communicate with rescue organizations. When a rescue contacts us with a prospective adopter, timing matters a lot in terms of connecting the animal with the new interested party. We have historically made provisions for a very fluid exchange of information. We’re committed to maintaining that level of responsiveness as we implement our new staffing protocols.

Another purpose of the meeting was to introduce the rescues to a software platform we make available to them that will help the rescues search which animals we have in kennels. The volunteer who developed that tool was present to give a primer on how to use it to matchmake with new homes. Ideas were exchanged on changes we might consider to make the software tool even more effective.

The primary reason for the meeting was to give my staff and me an opportunity to sit together with our rescue partners and express our gratitude for the work they do helping us find great homes for our animals. At PACC we are navigating the domestic animal world for all of Pima County. There’s no way we can do the adopting, fostering, medical, enforcement and intake without the help of outside groups. We will continue these rescue/PACC meetings as a way of cross-pollinating ideas. Some came from last week's meeting. Others will come from future meetings. And along the way all of us will link arms in mutual support of the animals we encounter who are simply looking for a loving home.

With thanks,

Steve Kozachik, PACC Director
