It was storytime at Pima Animal Care Center.

In front of a row of kennels, seven people sat side by side and read to dogs, often glancing up at their attentive listeners as they turned the pages. Some of the dogs greeted their visitors by barking, but then, one by one, they all calmed down, soothed by the comforting sound of a kind voice. 

It was the first event in a new program called Aphasia Reading with Furry Friends, or ARFF. The program benefits both individuals living with aphasia — a language disorder that affects a person’s ability to communicate — and anxious pups at PACC.

Bat walks offer rare insight into Arizona’s most mysterious residents

It was a bat, one of thousands fluttering through the cool air above the pond at Agua Caliente Park. The only sign of their presence was a soft fluttering of wings.

But the bats were still being observed, even if they couldn’t be seen. Pima County Conservation Lands & Resources' nighttime bat walks are a rare opportunity to get a better view — and a better understanding — of these familiar but mysterious creatures.

58 Vote Centers open for CD7
Special Primary on July 15

The Pima County Elections Department will open 58 vote centers on Tuesday, July 15, for the Special Primary Election to fill the U.S. Congressional District 7 seat left vacant by the death of Raúl Grijalva. 

Vote centers will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on July 15.

Wastewater seeks public input on
proposed subsidy expansion

The Pima County Regional Wastewater Reclamation Department wants to hear from you! The department is considering expansion of its Sewer Outreach Subsidy program, which helps to ensure that sewer fees do not become a burden for low-income County residents.

You can review the proposed changes and provide your comments at the link below. All comments must be received by Aug. 11, 2025.

Meet Logan Phillips, the Library’s newest writer in residence

Local author Logan Phillips has officially been named the Pima County Public Library's writer in residence for this summer! His residency will run through Aug. 20 and will include three writing programs as well as a special "Make Your Own Book" workshop for kids. He will also be available for one-on-one consultations.
