Board adopts FY26 budget, funds community priorities, lowers tax rate it set in May

The Board of Supervisors adopted the budget for next fiscal year, providing funding for critical infrastructure, public health and safety, economic growth, and more.  We’re still keeping an eye on the federal government and holding out hope that Congressionally-approved funding is made available. That issue is out of our hands. What is in our hands is the County tax rate, and the Board reduced the proposed tax rate it tentatively set in May to ensure a neutral operations budget.

Mexican pro baseball team to make Kino Sports Complex home

Professional baseball is back at Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium. A team from the Liga Arco Mexicana Pacifico will make Kino Sports Complex its home, with winter league season starting in October. The popular Mexican winter league has a large following in Tucson, as evidenced by the packed stadiums the past several years for Mexican Baseball Fiesta at Kino. The team is just called the Tucson Baseball Team for now, but will hold a team naming contest this fall.

Don’t hike in the heat and be sure to follow County, state, and federal fire restrictions

As you may have noticed, the National Weather Service has issued several Extreme Heat Warnings the past two weeks, and it is important to remember to restrict your outdoor activity when it’s this hot. If you’re going to go for a hike, make sure it is very early in the morning or near sunset. Any other time is dangerous. And the Board at the beginning of June imposed Stage 2 Fire Restrictions for all County properties. That means no fires or activities that cause sparks. These restrictions are similar to those imposed by the state and the federal government for public lands last month. Enjoy the summer, but be safe. Board approves County portion of a multi-billion-dollar economic development project

The Board of Supervisors at its June 17 meeting approved a land purchase agreement with a company that intends to build a $1.2 billion data center campus near the Fairgrounds in the southeast valley. The project now moves to the city of Tucson for consideration. All participants involved in crafting the agreement took great care to ensure the project protected precious water resources. This is potentially the largest capital investment by an employer in decades and the infrastructure upgrades associated with it will create opportunities for similar projects in the future.
