One-Stop Center helps single mom soar to success as aviation technician

Rubi Munoz Castro was living from paycheck to paycheck and struggling to pay the bills. The 33-year-old single mother of two young children wanted to do something more with her life, but she didn’t have any goals for her future. 

Then she came to the Pima County Kino One-Stop Career Center, looking for help getting her Airframe & Powerplant license, which would enable her to work on a plane’s frame and engine. 

That turned out to be the first stop on her flight to success.

Pima County's Community Mental Health and Addiction program recently hosted a comprehensive brainstorming session, seeking ways to truly make an impact on mental health and addiction challenges in the region. The Behavioral Health Provider Conference brought together dozens of community partners to address substance use, mental health, and related issues.

Meet 5 of the hundreds of PACC pups you can get paid to foster

Dog

With July 4 – and a potential influx of lost dogs – just around the corner, Pima Animal Care Center is in urgent need of foster and adoptive families for dogs. Through July 9, PACC is offering a $5 a day stipend (up to 14 days) to anyone who fosters a dog that weighs 40-plus pounds. 

These are five of the hundreds of dogs who are looking for their new home.

Pima County Wastewater seeks community input on Roger Road plant project

The Pima County Regional Wastewater Reclamation Department (RWRD) is exploring ways to redevelop the site of the former Roger Road wastewater plant, which has stood vacant since it closed more than a decade ago. The County hopes to revitalize the site, which is conveniently close to the Chuck Huckelberry Loop as well as the City of Tucson’s Sweetwater Wetlands Park.

You can help by taking this survey, which builds on feedback from two public workshops held by RWRD with its project partner, the Center for Creative Land Recycling. Your answers will help to inform the future of this strategically located property.

Tucson was once an oasis?

Pima County Conservation Lands & Resources teamed up with local documentarian Lisa Molomot and University of Arizona students to produce a video series intended to support Tucson's Silverbell Road Project and explore local history.

In this video, discover how the Santa Cruz River has nourished the people of the Sonoran Desert for thousands of years, and how the river has changed over time.

Across five regions and back to the library

Isaiah Ortiz

Isaiah Ortiz traveled far and wide across Arizona to write "Starry Sky Adventures: Arizona," his guide to finding the spots with the best night skies in the state. But he researched and wrote the book at Woods Memorial Library. "This place is really important," he told Pima County Public Library Community Relations Manager Holly Schaffer. Here's how the library helped Isaiah finish his book and share his adventures with the world.
