Good morning,
Road Repair and Maintenance is a Shared Priority
Since becoming your District One Supervisor, my top priority has always been constituent service. One of the most common concerns we hear from residents involves road conditions. It’s no secret that road maintenance was neglected for many years, and we’re now working hard to make up for lost time. I want to take a moment to explain how we are currently addressing this critical part of our county’s infrastructure.
When the Pima County Board of Supervisors finalizes the budget in June, we also vote on the list of projects funded through the Pavement Repair and Preservation Program. The capital improvement budget is set through the Board-approved Pay-As-You-Go (PAYGO) Program. This year, we’ve allocated $25 million in state-shared gas tax and vehicle license tax revenues for this program.
Since the launch of PAYGO in FY 2019/20, the total investment in pavement repair across Pima County has reached $324.4 million, a major step forward in restoring our roadways.
How do we decide which roads get repaired? The selection process is driven by data. Each road is assessed and given a Pavement Condition Index (PCI) score. Transportation staff then use those scores to create a prioritized list of roads that are either in need of repair or ready for scheduled maintenance. That list is submitted to the Pima County Transportation Advisory Committee (PCTAC) for review and ultimately comes before the Board of Supervisors for final approval. For more details on the selection process click this LINK.
While we still have work to do, this structured and transparent process helps ensure that road repair funding is used where it's needed most, and that every dollar we spend delivers real results for our community.
