A bright yellow bird flickers through the air and perches on a tiny branch. It’s one of the only signs of movement in this peaceful patch of undeveloped desert land, which rambles across nearly 48 acres between Rita Road and Old Vail Road, just north of the Julian Wash.
But this isn’t just any old land — it’s an enormous detention basin, newly engineered to recharge the local aquifer.
Once the first drops of the summer rains start to fall, this basin will quietly but steadily begin doing its job — thanks to a partnership between the Pima County Regional Flood Control District and the City of Tucson.
Preserving the natural beauty of the Sonoran Desert and its various ecosystems has long been one of Pima County’s most important priorities. As the County seeks to update its 10-year comprehensive land plan, Pima Prospers, protection of open space lands remains one of the plan’s key topics.
