Pima County Economic Development head wins 2024 Future Leader Award

The International Economic Development Council (IEDC) gave its 2024 Future Leader award to Heath Vescovi-Chiordi, director of Pima County’s Economic Development Office, for the work he’s done attracting new businesses to the region, helping small businesses succeed and retaining and expanding established businesses.

Since joining the County in 2022, Vescovi-Chiordi has helped lead Pima County’s efforts to attract a 1,000-job company with $1.2 billion in capital investment and a $3.1 billion economic impact to the state, shifted the focus of the department to work proactively in the community on business retention and expansion, boost foreign direct investment, and guided development of the Board of Supervisors-adopted Economic Development strategic plan.

Japanese delegation visits Pima County

Japanese delegation

Pima County Economic Development hosted a Foreign Direct Investment reception for a Japanese delegation Feb. 21, in partnership with the Arizona Commerce Authority, the University of Arizona, the City of Tucson and Sun Corridor, Inc. The event was held at the Historic Pima County Courthouse.

The delegation was composed of more than 50 Japanese technology companies that are seeking to expand into the United States, specifically Arizona — and Southern Arizona in particular.

Arizona-Sonora Economic Forum set to strengthen binational trade

The Arizona-Sonora Economic Forum, a premier binational collaboration focused on economic development and trade, will take place on Thursday, May 8, at the Tucson Convention Center.

This landmark event will feature Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs and Sonora Governor Alfonso Durazo, and will bring together industry leaders, policymakers, and business professionals to drive economic prosperity between Arizona and Sonora.

Hosted by the Southern Arizona Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the Arizona-Mexico Commission, and in partnership with Pima County Economic Development, City of Tucson Economic Initiatives, and the Mexican Consulate in Tucson, this must-attend event will provide a platform for in-depth discussions on strengthening cross-border trade, fostering investment, and unlocking new opportunities for economic collaboration.

Community is invited to celebrate education people, programs and agencies

MEC event

The Metropolitan Education Commission (MEC), a joint commission of Pima County and the City of Tucson dedicated to empowering people of all ages to reach their fullest potential through learning and service, is celebrating education during An Evening to Empower(ED) on May 9.

Coinciding with Teacher Appreciation Week, the celebration recognizes the outstanding service of educators, learners and community partners who advance education within Pima County.

AZ Tech Council launches new committee focused on aerospace ecosystem

AZ Tech Council event

The Arizona Technology Council launched its Aerospace, Aviation, Space and Defense (AASD) Committee on Feb. 4 during an event at Honeywell near Sky Harbor Airport.

AASD was formed to unify and accelerate Arizona’s leadership in these critical industries, all of which are important for Pima County. The committee convened with more than 30 key leaders from across the state’s aerospace, aviation and defense sectors at the inaugural meeting in December at offices of the Arizona Commerce Authority.

Ribbons fly as Picture Rocks Cooling, Heating & Plumbing grows

Hundreds of local businesses gathered at the new location of Picture Rocks Cooling, Heating & Plumbing Feb. 6 as several chambers of commerce gathered to cut a ribbon and support this expansion.

The Marana, Oro Valley, Tucson Metro and Southern Arizona Hispanic chambers of commerce leaders and members joined in the celebration, which also featured a speech from Rex Scott, chair of the Pima County Board of Supervisors.
